The BNI Innovation & Discovery Initiative is a Business Now Incorporated program designed to engage students, entrepreneurs, and community leaders in building the tools to engineer industries, rebuild communities, and design future economies.
This is a student-led initiative that began at Virginia State University, where I currently study Economics & Finance. While the project was originally called the VSU Innovation & Discovery Initiative, we’ve rebranded to reflect its broader vision and long-term mission.
The Initiative will now be open to students at Virginia universities—with the potential to expand into HBCUs across the nation and eventually universities beyond Virginia.
To equip students and entrepreneurs with applied learning, business strategy, and innovation tools that prepare them to design sustainable businesses, strengthen communities, and impact future economies.
Innovation means building what doesn’t yet exist. Discovery means uncovering what has always been possible. Together, this initiative helps participants move from idea to impact.
Our newest initiative, Scholars Who Mean Business, is in partnership with Communities In Schools (CIS) Virginia. This program provides mentoring, media training, and life skills development for 7th and 8th graders. Students not only gain tools to navigate peer relationships and build character but also engage in hands-on projects like running a student-powered news crew. The program bridges education, creativity, and entrepreneurship, preparing youth to succeed both in school and beyond.
In partnership with Yoshi Kidz Youth Academy, a youth dance group, we designed and facilitated Kidpreneurship Cohorts to help young creatives understand the business behind their passion. Students learned the fundamentals of entrepreneurship — from turning their talents into marketable services to branding and financial basics — showing them that their art can also build sustainable businesses.
What started at VSU is just the beginning. As the BNI Innovation & Discovery Initiative, our goal is to become a collaborative hub where students at HBCUs and beyond can come together to innovate, launch, and grow.
